So lots of people are talking about detoxing. So what does that actually mean? Getting rid of toxins form your body? Is it right for you? Should you do it? What are the risks and benefits? Those are all questions I asked myself. So I decided to check it out.
So lets break it down:
What is it actually? Detoxing the body has been around for centuries, only it was called fasting. It is still practiced all over the world, and in many countries it is part of their weekly routine. Fasting allows the gut to rest for at least 12-18 hours. It is thought to help inflammation. You would still have teas or honey during that time to maintain blood sugar and hydration. Some religions use it to purify the mind and spirit. Or to help the person think clearer, and focus.
Nowadays, its become so popular, that there are detox products everywhere, claiming they will help the body to get rid of toxins, lose weight and give you more energy and help you feel better. Although there is very little clinical evidence that these diets are effective, there really has not been any true clinical trials in humans to support it. However, there is evidence that certain herbs and foods do help in eliminating toxins from the liver, colon, and kidneys. The three main “detoxing” organs in the body. You have to be cautious as some of these products could be misleading and even dangerous. Most of them work on either the gut, liver or kidneys, by expelling either fluids or waste.
So yes there are herbs and supplements out there that will actually “cleanse” those organs of “toxins” but how that is done is the key. You have to be aware of the ingredients and herbs you are ingesting. Some can be contraindicated if you have certain medical conditions, are pregnant or breast feeding or if you are not an adult.
It is very easy for the body to become dehydrated and lose precious electrolytes while you are doing these “cleanses”. An electrolyte imbalance can be very dangerous and even deadly.
The 3 organs involved, liver, kidneys and colon naturally “detox” the body by removing toxic food particles, and other things from the blood, and gut and filters it out. If any of these organs are off balance or inflamed, this natural process is disrupted, and toxins therefore accumulate. This triggers the body to respond in several ways. One is by storing fat to fight off the toxins. Yes, fat is one way the body “defends” itself from toxins.
4 Quick ways to naturally detox:
1-Increase your fiber—yes fiber is one of the best ways to cleanse your gut. By increasing fiber rich foods to your diet, you will feel fuller and more satisfied, wont over-eat, and the best benefit is that it helps to naturally clean out the toxins from your colon in the form of waste. You will digest your foods better, and actually help absorb more of the nutrients while it decreases inflammation. This will help the “good bacteria” grow in the gut. Its also a great way to lower blood sugar and decrease cholesterol.
2. Drink more water—you need to drink half your body weight in ounces per day. Thats an average of 64 ounces for most people. Your body is mostly made up of water. Water helps to flush out toxins via the kidneys and gut. It also improves your circulation by hydrating you, lubricates joints, and helps to prevent dry skin which will help reduce wrinkles and dryness. Plus so many more benefits. To me water is the magic ingredient to relieve many aliments such as headaches, muscle and joint pain, constipation, etc.
3. Eat clean whole foods—you know we all heard it before, but its true! Our biggest contributor to toxins is the food and drink we take in! So eat more veggies and fruits and whole grains. Limit red meat as much as you can, and avoid all processed foods. Those are the ones that come in a package. Stay as close to the natural state of the food as possible. If its been processed down, its toxic to your body! Shop on the outside aisles of the supermarket, and buy organic as much as you can. Avoid too much alcohol and caffeine as they are also toxic and acidic to the body.
4. Sweat—Yes get moving and break a good sweat. Prespiration or sweating is the body way of not only cooling off, but it helps to remove toxins through the pores in your skin. Theres nothing like getting into some action doing something you really like and heat up a good sweat. I love to dance, even if its in my living room to some great music, or going for a brisk walk or jog outside in the fresh air, where I get the double benefit of also removing toxins through my lungs!
